The church of St Matthew's was built in 1857, together with the adjacent church school, which was completed a year later.
Until about 150 years ago Westnewton had no church and only a tiny school.
The Bishop of Carlisle laid the foundation stone on 11th June 1856. He came by train to Aspatria and was brought on by carriage, but many walked in procession from the station. A year later the Bishop returned to dedicate and consecrate the church to St Matthew.

St Matthew's Church of England School has a history that dates back to 1856 when the church was built. The school was built alongside the church, and the two are closely linked.
The school has undergone many changes over the years, it is a small school with the pupils from outlying villages and nearby towns, the children can attend from 4-11 years. The vision and ethos of the school is that all of the children feel accepted and loved, and understand their worth and ability.

Westnewton Village Hall was originally built as a reading room in c1920. It is a registered charity (Charity Number 520378).
